Ipswich Hospital Installs Specialist Screed to Bring Department up to Standard

Several of Flowcrete UK’s specialist flooring solutions were applied in a new addition to Ipswich Hospital’s oncology department to ensure that the floor would be at the necessary level and standard to provide a functional, long lasting surface.

The resin-flooring specialist was called in as discrepancies in the level of the new concrete slab had led to several issues with the initial flooring project. This problem meant that some parts of the floor were as low as 55mm below on a floating floor construction the level at which the doors and electrical sockets had been installed. This caused a knock-on effect with the traditional fibre sand and cement screed that was laid, as in order to meet the set datum levels it could not be laid to its nominal thickness of 75mm. This meant that when the screed was tested using BRE (ISCR) test, 37% of the results met the standard required of a Category A screed, which was below the specification requirements. To make the overall screed achieve a Category A standard, while ensuring that it met the necessary level, it was decided that the screed would be overlaid with a thin coating. To achieve this the existing screed was first lightly abraded to provide an appropriate surface for the new coating to adhere to. Next, Flowcrete UK’s Penetrated Hardening System (PHS) was applied to repair any cracks, damaged areas and cracked joints and then the approximately 600m2 area was coated with Flowscreed Industrial Top at a thickness of 7mm. The new coating incorporated the Hydraseal epoxy damp proof membrane due to the screed’s Relative Humidity being above 75%. The overlaying project, which took five days to complete, successfully brought the screed up to a Category A standard and the client was provided with a ten year warranty by Flowcrete UK.

Design and Aesthetics Considerations for Central Flooring Services

‘Maggie’s’ the Royal Oldham Hospital is one of 19 specially designed centres for people affected by cancer.

The late Charles Jencks formed ‘Maggie’s’ cancer charity after visiting his wife ‘Maggie Keswick Jencks’ while she was dying from cancer. Jenks and his wife were so appalled by the sterile hospice conditions, that they set up the charity. The main aim of the charity is to provide non-clinical environments where anyone who is affected by cancer can stop by for support and advice. The design and aesthetic appearance were very important factors for the chosen flooring system at this special patent centre. Noise suppression, comfort underfoot and a colour to reflect non direct sunlight into the building were key requirements, all met by Altro Flexi Flow resin flooring system.

Central Flooring Clean Up Again

Carrying any works in a Production Hall can be problematic, however, employing the services of a FeRFA member will undoubtably reduce any issues. Using fully trained staff who have undergone the FeRFA Apprenticeship scheme will also assist greatly when the floors are being installed. Central Flooring proudly state that all their on-site staff have been trained to the FeRFA Standard.

All the resin systems used were solvent free and contained the lowest levels of VOC’s available form UK suppliers. The project involved thousands of metres of seamless resin systems form coatings, screeds and demarcation. The project was carried out to the strict timescales agreed and kept to the exact budget. Remaining totally independant allows Central Flooring Services to listen to the customers needs and deliver the solutions he requires. Central Flooring Services have been rewarded over the past 13 years by winning no less than 11 Industry Awards. Four of these awards were for our continued commitment to the Environment. At Central Flooring, we understand that we all have a responsibility to look after the environment. We divert 97% each month from Landfill, and find working closely with our FeRFA Partners, Reconomy allows us to achieve our recycling goals each month. We were asked to assist with one of our clients when he decided it was time the whole factory flooring system was updated. This would involve static dissipative system, floor screeds, epoxy coatings and huge amounts of demarcation in multi colours. We teamed up with Flowcrete who delivered a full specification which would allow us to follow to ensure each system was installed in the correct part of the factory. We were also able to offer our client a full waste stream on all the waste generated during the works, and as Licensed Waste Carriers, we were able to remove certain waste after each process, thus keeping waste on site to a minimum. The works were to be carried out during a 10-day shutdown which would allow us to carry out all works without disruption to production and allow us to install larger areas. The works involved specialist floor preparation using diamond grinding to remove all the old floor coverings to make way for the new resin systems. We used systems from Type 3 through to Type 8 to provide the client with the optimum solutions available. All the staff on the project are trained to FeRFA standards and all but one have completed the apprenticeship scheme. The project will, when rolled out to all the factory be one of the biggest projects to be carried out Derbyshire in production areas. As Independant Flooring Contractors, we were able to listen to the clients needs and deliver flooring solutions to suit them. The photographs taken do not do justice to the amount of floor preparation, copper tape layout, earthing point detail and final floor demarcation.Central Flooring Services have been rewarded over the past 13 years by winning no less than 11 Industry Awards. Four of these awards were for our continued commitment to the Environment. At Central Flooring, we understand that we all have a responsibility to look after the environment. Sika & Zircon provide the Cure for Online Pharmacy

For its new warehouse facility in Leeds, online pharmacy Pharmacy2U required a hard-wearing and versatile flooring system that would offer outstanding durability. Utilising extensive technical and practical expertise, Sika and Zircon provided a series of solutions that worked together to create a uniform and seamless aesthetic.

Founded in 1999, Pharmacy2U is the UK’s leading NHS-approved online pharmacy, dispensing NHS prescriptions to tens of thousands of patients. Following an early expansion in which the company moved four times in its first six years, Pharmacy2U recently moved to its new steel-framed production facility to accommodate and assist its continued growth. Although the floor was in good condition, it was uneven in places and required a uniform surface for foot traffic and the use of forklift trucks. Working with resin floor installers Zircon Flooring Ltd, Sika utilised a series of high-performance systems that blended seamlessly to create a consistent surface and appearance across three floors totaling 2,500m², as well as a separate system for the mezzanine first floor deck. “A number of different systems were required and it was vital that they worked seamlessly together to meet the client’s needs for cleanability,” said Cameron Vauvelle-Don, Sika. “The project comprised a series of specifications, including anti-slip properties for the entrance, additional resistance for a forklift truck area and the remainder of the floor for foot traffic.” First, Zircon Flooring Ltd installed Sikafloor 161 – a two-part low viscosity epoxy resin primer for the concrete substrate that offers easy application and short waiting times. Sikafloor 161 offers excellent bond strength and can be used up to a moisture content level of 6%. Utilising Sikafloor 263SL for the forklift truck area, the screed offers excellent resistance to wear when subjected to medium heavy loading. To provide additional slip resistance in the entrance area, Sika and Zircon incorporated aggregate into the flooring system. For the majority of the floor which would only be subjected to foot traffic – Sikafloor 264 proved the perfect solution. Combining long term performance with a stunning and sleek finish, the Sika specification delivered a hard-wearing flooring system for online pharmacy Pharmacy2U that will guarantee outstanding durability and longevity that will stand the test of time.

Birmingham Children’s Hospital

Zenith Pola Flooring Ltd was appointed by contractors, William Gough, to work on the refurbishment of Ward 10 High Dependency Unit at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, located in Birmingham City Centre.

With children needing to return to the unit by the end of the month, Zenith had just three and a half weeks to complete the flooring installation. Located on the third floor, the project was further complicated by limited access, with materials and waste products having to be transported via the fire escape. The client selected resin flooring as an alternative to the existing vinyl floor, which required constant maintenance, causing logistical and operational problems. In contrast, ComfortFloor Pro resin flooring is completely seamless, extremely hardwearing and easily cleaned, with excellent acoustic qualities, comfortable underfoot and a ten-year guarantee.

Norwood Hall, Joint Services Centre, Lambeth

Surtech created a state-of-the-art Joint Service Centre for Lambeth PCT using Altro Terrazzolite which included natural marble within the ground and polished surface.

The Norwood Hall, Joint Service Centre, is a multi-agency building housing a customer service centre; a Neighbourhood Resource Centre to include a GP surgery, dental health, community health services and out of hospital services; community swimming pool; gymnasium, dance studio, community venue, and offices for the Lambeth PCT. The building steps up from one to four storeys high, cut into the side of a steep slope to create an internal area of 5,400m². It is designed as a form emerging from the landscape resembling a sedimental rock formation containing a series of brick volumes – connected by a wide “internal street”. The quality and choice of materials internally plays a vital role in the reinforcement this concept. The floor finish of the street is one of the first surfaces to greet incoming visitors and so controlled slip-resistance was required, but it was essential that the architectural brief was met, in the form of a finish which appeared to be “of the earth” including natural elements and yet did not dominate the perspective. The inclusion of natural marble with the ground and polished surface of Altro Terrazzolite provided the appearance and versatility demanded of this project. he grade of diamonds used to finish the surface allowed zoned variations in the slip-resistance, without compromising the ease of cleaning and stunning appearance to all areas.

RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing at Wigan and Leigh Hospice

250 square metres of RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing was laid to the entrance and gardens of Wigan and Leigh Hospice using Harvest Crunch aggregate blend.

The Woodview Centre was added to the Wigan & Leigh Hospice in a £1.5 million building project which included a two storey building to house the Hospice in Your Home service, consulting rooms and therapy clinics, it also involved landscaping a large area of grounds. The client’s brief was to “build a modern eco-friendly development within a peaceful and therapeutic environment”. It is known that a green and leafy setting can benefit a person’s wellbeing and the landscaping was designed to provide a tranquil and relaxing outdoor environment that could be viewed and visited by patients and their visiting friends and family. Pathways were installed through the existing woodland area as well as a new pond, providing a natural link between the new Woodview Centre and the original hospice gardens and nature reserve. Paths and the entrance to the new centre were surfaced with RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing, using a Harvest Crunch aggregate blend. RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing provides a slip-resistant, strong, durable and porous surface, which is particularly suitable for wheelchair ‘traffic’ as wheels will not sink and get caught as they can in loose gravel paths. The porosity of the system allows water to drain to the base and ensures that paths are free from standing water enabling patients and carers to be able to enjoy the natural outdoor setting in safety. This permeability makes the surfacing system SuDS compliant, which is in keeping with other sustainable aspects of the building project which include solar panels, under floor heating and the new pond which increases biodiversity in the area and is refreshed with recycled rainwater collected from the centre’s roof.

Morgan Stanley Clinical Building, GOSH, London

This £100m project required the full spectrum of resin flooring products in the kitchen and associated areas, the restaurant and interactive play areas. 388 linear metres of curved, pre cast, resin terrazzo coving was manufactured and installed on contoured walls and columns.

The Morgan Stanley Building is part of a £250m scheme to redevelop and provide new state of the art facilities for the famous Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, the world leader in treatment and care for critical and terminally ill children. The new facility, which enables 20% more children to be treated and provide provide pioneering research and treatment, was opened in Olympic year by Lord Coe and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson. This £100m project provides new, innovative, facilities at this world famous children’s hospital. It required the full spectrum of resin flooring products in the kitchen and associated areas, the restaurant and interactive play areas, on an underlying substrate that included under floor heating and a building without any structural movement or expansion joints. State of the art kitchens provide over 800 covers daily from breakfast to supper for patients, parents, staff and public. The 708m2 flooring and 478 lm coving had to be completed within a two week time frame by working at weekends and overnight. On level 2, the interactive play area and restaurant involved 1,200m2 Mondeco Exotic and 388 lm coving and was completed within a five week period, again working at weekends and overnight. Flowcrete manufactured the curved, precast, radiused coving in resin terrazzo, which McDaid’s installed to contoured walls and columns. At the time of installation, this was the largest amount of resin terrazzo radiused coving on any one project. The project as a whole met with both BREEAM and NEAT ratings, deliveries to site were maximised, all waste was recycled and all operatives travelled to and from the site on public transport.
