Isocrete 1500 Specified for Landmark Residential Development

12,000 square metres of Flowcrete’s fast-drying, high-strength, self-levelling screed system, Isocrete 1500, have been installed at a prestigious development in London’s sought-after Mayfair district – Clarges Mayfair.

Designed by award-winning architects Squire and Partners and built by the main contractor Laing O’Rourke, Clarges Mayfair complements the historic architecture of surrounding Piccadilly landmarks. Set over ten floors, the development features stunning views over Green Park and Buckingham Palace and exceptional private wellness facilities, including a 25 metre swimming pool, fully equipped gymnasium, sauna and steam room, as well as a private cinema screen and 24 hour concierge and security. Isocrete 1500 has been designed primarily for new construction where finishes such as carpets, ceramic tiles, vinyl, linoleum wood block or cork need to be applied quickly. It may be used as a screed to receive an epoxy resin finish in areas taking light traffic. Isocrete 1500 can be walked on in as little as two hours, speeding up construction schedules and allowing follow-on trades early access to the site, therefore no longer having to wait days or weeks for the screed to cure. A second screed system from Flowcrete, Isopol SBR, was also used in the spa and swimming pool area on accounts of it moisture tolerance.  Isopol SBR is a styrene butadiene polymer latex screed additive and bonding agent. It is used to produce polymer modified wearing screeds for heavy duty and industrial flooring and for rapid drying, levelling screeds (minimum 10 mm thickness) to receive various types of floor finishes.

Ultrasyntec Provide Interim Solution For Food Manufacturer Warehouse

When a leading food producer approached Ultrasyntec for direction and suggestions regarding one of their warehouse floors, the team faced a difficult issue. The area in question, measuring a total of 1984m2, was currently used for storing food packaging, manufacturing equipment and other items.
Unfortunately, a previous regulatory audit had resulted in the client being instructed to have all concrete floors sealed so that there would be no chance of cross contamination from packaging and other materials. The intention was to transform this entire area into a food production-ready site by 2020, which would require spending a substantial amount of money at a later date to make the site suitable for producing food for human consumption. For this interim solution, Ultrasyntec recommended a full captive shot blast to clean the tired old floor and get rid of any historic oil and substance spillages. Once this was complete, the team followed up with localised floor and joint repairs using a mixture of robust polyurethane mortars and epoxy fillers to bring the surface up to standard. Work on the entire area was split into two halves so that existing packaging and machinery could be retained within the space whilst work was carried out. When the substrate had been suitably prepared, Ultrasyntec applied two coats of Resdev’s Pumaseal PC Silk – a hard-wearing polyurethane sealant, in an attractive and practical mid-grey colour. All roller shutter doorway areas and fire escape exits were treated with a slip-resistant dressing for enhanced health and safety, and all RSJ stations were prepared and coated to a height of two metres using a safety yellow epoxy paint for added visibility. The Ultrasyntec solution provided the client with a cost effective, hard wearing floor, capable of giving significantly more than the two-year life required before the site would be transformed again.

Unipart Group Showpiece HSS Fuel Cell Area

Resin floor coverings had presented many problems in the past for Unipart House in Cowley, Oxfordshire, due to the fact that the majority of their substrate was made from asphalt.

Unipart asked Zenith Pola Flooring to specify and design a unique system capable of bonding to the asphalt, with the characteristics to withstand both industrial and foot traffic. In particular, they wished to create a ‘showpiece’ area, measuring 1000m2, for displaying to clients, calling for a solution that provided a totally seamless, durable finish, which could be guaranteed for a number of years. Therefore Zenith turned to Arturo for a specification. Zenith first utilised FM 30 industrial top in conjunction with RR 201 fibreglass reinforcement. This provided a loosely laid mesh that dispersed into the industrial top when laid, ensuring the strength and characteristics necessary to work on the asphalt substrate and providing a suitable base for the resin finish. Once the base had been primed, Zenith applied a 2mm Arturo EP 2500 epoxy self-smoothing resin system, producing a completely seamless, low maintenance, hard wearing finish, with an additional Arturo PU 7900 satin seal coating ensuring extra scratch resistance. The project was completed on schedule and without any problems. The floor was exceptionally well finished resulting in a very durable hard and wearing surface. The seamless nature of the resin flooring means that dirt and dust cannot accumulate within it, making it easy to clean and maintain.

Altro and Surtech show art of bespoke design at new Jerwood Gallery

Bespoke Altro resin floors have been developed to complement the innovative design of the new Jerwood Gallery in Hastings.

The Jerwood Gallery is a £4m new gallery on the seafront in Hastings, housing the Jerwood Foundation’s collection of modern British paintings and drawings, and a curated exhibitions programme of contemporary art across disciplines. The building is a subtly faceted form clad in hand-glazed ceramic tiles, enclosing carefully calibrated internal spaces drawing in the views from the spectacular location and encouraging a sense of exploration and surprise. The gallery opened in March 2012 and recently won a Public and Community Award from the Sussex Heritage Trust. The architect, HAT Projects wanted a terrazzo style floor that had a texture to it, a slight warmth and movement. Altro worked closely with contractor Surtech Flooring who recommended Altro Terrazzolite EP resin flooring as the basis for the bespoke mix. Hand-made samples using different coloured marble chips were created and a pale pink was chosen for the galleries and foyers, and a darker pink for the toilets and café, which are lovely warm shades.” Altro Terrazzolite EP is a decorative four-part solvent-free epoxy resin system, and has been hailed as a revolution in resin flooring. It’s a lightweight, seamless, sophisticated marble-look resin that delivers a touch of class to public and communal areas. It uses naturally coloured marble chips bound together with a coloured epoxy resin and is then ground and polished. It has a nominal thickness of 6mm and uses matching sections of perimeter skirting which are preformed off-site.

On the way to Wembley

The thousands of sport and music fans entering Wembley Stadium do so via a series of ramps made safe to use thanks to Entech Services and RonaDeck Resin Bonded Surfacing.

Wembley Stadium, home to the FA Cup and venue for the football finals of the 2012 Olympics, can house 90,000 seated fans and a further 15,000 standing. These enormous crowds of sport and music fans enter the stadium via a series of ramps which lead into the stadium at five levels. RonaDeck Resin Bonded Surfacing was chosen to provide a hardwearing and slip resistant surfacing to the tarmac ramps, ensuring that crowds can gain access to the Stadium in safety in even the wettest of weather conditions.

New Racket Court at Tonbridge School

Only three racket courts have been built in the UK during the last century, of which two have had the playing surface supplied and laid by Ryebrook Resins.

Rackets began as an 18th century pastime in London and has changed little since that time. It is played in an enclosed court and only three racket courts have been built in the UK during the last century, of which two have had the playing surface supplied and laid by Ryebrook Resins. Guests attending the opening of the new court at Tonbridge School had the opportunity to play on the court, with its unique red floor before a special exhibition match.

Community Religious Centre, Leicester

This community religious centre project in Leicester required a decorative, resilient, marble like finish and entailed intricate detailing at differing angles

This sensitive project at a community religious centre in Leicester had to be carried out avoiding prayer times – which were held five times a day. The community funded project required a decorative, resilient, marble like finish and entailed intricate detailing at differing angles and also vertical finishes. This required the commissioning of specially made hand trowels to fit the angles and absolute precision on the part of the floorlayers. An Altroscreed Quartz in Opal was chosen for the finish and the whole community is delighted with the finish.

Shepherd’s Bush gets makeover

What is believed to be the largest single resin bound surfacing project in the UK has been completed using Ronacrete’s RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing System where more than 7,500m2 has been laid.

The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham required 7700 square metres of resin bound surfacing to the paths and to paved areas within the park. This was part of a refurbishment project which included improving the routes across and around the Green as well as the planting of further trees and the creation of two children’s play areas. The RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing system was supplied as a two-component UV stable polyurethane resin, this was to be mixed with the Maple Harvest aggregate which the Borough had selected. The resin components were mixed with a slow speed drill and paddle before being added to a large forced action mixer containing the aggregate. Once the aggregate was fully coated with resin operatives spread RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing to level and smoothed the surface with a steel float. The finished surface was ready for foot traffic in four hours.

Beauty Make-Over Treatment from Remmers

Remmers provided a make over for the Beauty Shop in Huddersfield with two new co-ordinated colours for the treatment and tanning rooms.

The Beauty Shop in Huddersfield required an upgrade to the flooring of the ground-floor treatment and tanning rooms. Although the existing floor was still in relatively good condition, the Salon required a change to the original colour scheme and selected a two coloured Remmers Colorid Flake system to be installed throughout. The revamp also required a corresponding darker floor to be installed in the tanning room due to the nature of the treatments. All of the floor areas were initially prepared; base coated with Epoxy BS3000 and then flaked with Colorid. All areas were then sealed with Epoxy UV 100 and two coats of Remmers PUR Aqua Top M to create the specified colours and design. The works were completed with minimal disruption, meaning the Beauty Shop was quickly able to re-open for business.

New concourse for the Olympic Velodrome

Central Flooring Services has just completed a 600m2 concourse at the Olympic Park Velodrome. The specification called for the grinding of the existing concrete followed by the installation of a new resin flooring system with high durability and aesthetics.

A part of the legacy work to convert the Olympic Park into the Queen Elizabeth park, Central Flooring Services has installed a 600m2 resin flooring system to the concourse. Once the existing concrete floor had been fully ground and vacuumed all cracks and chips were repaired with an epoxy repair mortar and then coated with two coats of Sika 264 epoxy high build coating. To provide excellent durability and a high aesthetic look a further clear matt coat of Sika 365N was applied. The legacy committee, which is overseen by Lord Coe and the Mayor of London, worked with Central Flooring Services for the product and colour choice and were responsible for inspecting the project for signing off, so it was critical for the job to be of a high standard. A full ITP (inspection and testing programme) quality procedure was produced to ensure the completed project was handed over to a completely satisfied client with no defects.
