SIKA and IRL Group Complete Automotive Contract In Strict Timeframe

BMW Oxford required a flooring solution that would provide a safe working environment for their employees to carry out electrical component manufacturing.

Sika were invited to tender for the ESD Floor Protection Resin Flooring (FeRFA Type 5) serving materials banks on Lines 01, 21 & 40 totalling 3,710m2 at the Building 50 plant in Oxford. Although they were in our second term of framework contracting for BMW, as the works were over the £20,000 threshold, the project had to go out on a competitive tendering basis. The scope of the works within Building 50 was to erect a polythene screen from Heras Fencing surrounding lines 01, 21 and 40 up to roof height where practicable to reduce the risk of dust ingress to adjacent production vehicles, floor preparation and application of ESD protective coating (FeRFA Type 5 – Flow Applied Flooring). The biggest challenge, however, for this project was that all three areas had to start simultaneously on the Saturday and be complete by the Thursday. This was a massive area of 3,710m2 to complete in just six days. Day and nightshift operation was recommended to meet the stringent timing plan, resulting in IRL completing the entire works in just five days. This project won Large Industrial Project of the Year at the 2017/18 FeRFA Best Practice Awards.
