New Flooring For Thwaites Beer Brewers

Thwaites has been brewing beer since 1807, and the new site will bring the brewery, stables, head office and heritage centre into a single location, around five miles from its current home in Blackburn town centre.

The contractor developed their brand new facility for the local brewing giant and presented Ultrasyntec with the opportunity to lay the new floor, specially designed to meet the very specific challenges of today’s brewing processes. The new brewing area houses huge stainless-steel fermenting casks weighing in excess of 5 tonne when fully filled. With the flooring due to be subjected to rigorous wash downs alongside the various fermenting processes, high levels of chemical resistance are required, alongside the ability to withstand everyday wear and tear from beer barrels rolling along the floor. In addition, the perimeter walls have a 150mm rendered upstand to create a hygienic, seamless flow. In line with the hygiene requirements, all drainage has been manufactured using 316-grade stainless steel, with a load class C for the drain covers capable of withstanding heavyweight wheeled traffic such as forklift trucks. The entire project covers a floor area of 580m2, and Ultrasyntec used Resdev’s Pumadur DPM Primer, Pumadur RT at 9mm and Pumadur CG at 200mm high. The project was completed within a seven-day time window to match construction requirements on site. The work expected to keep the beer flowing and the traditions going for many years to come!
