Sandwell Aquatics Centre Smethwick

Wates Construction is a UK-wide family-owned contractor. They’re very experienced in successfully delivering complex projects across a range of industries, including education, residential, commercial, healthcare, justice and emergency services. Central Flooring Services have worked with Wates Construction for more than 10 years.

One of Wates’ projects was the Sandwell Aquatics Centre in Smethwick – a brand new venue to host the swimming and diving events for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. For this particular project,  Central Flooring Services’ team was commissioned to install resin flooring in the plant rooms, viewing areas and staircases.

Project

CFS applied a resin waterproof tanking coating in the plant room to protect the concrete from moisture. The viewing areas needed a new resin coating to make them more aesthetically pleasing, and on the stairs CFS applied a slip resistance safety coating.

Product

Watco floor safety coating and KDR resins.

Preparation

The floor was cleaned and prepped with a diamond grind.

Project duration

Two weeks.

About the project

Naturally, Aquatic Centres are warm. So, working in the plant rooms was warmer still, especially in full PPE – but the heat did help to enhance curing time! This project had to be turned around very quickly – which was no problem for the CFS team. In fact it was finished a day ahead of schedule.
