TRAINING NEWS - DECEMBER 2009

CONSTRUCTION SKILLS GRANT CHANGES FROM JANUARY 2010

The ConstructionSkills Board has agreed further changes to the CITB-ConstructionSkills Grants Scheme with effect from 1 January 2010.  After a year in which the construction industry has contracted by 13% resulting in falling levy and there has been continuing high demand for grants, the Government has demanded that ConstructionSkills restores its working capital.  This has necessitated changes to the Grants Scheme as follows:

  • Reduction in the Training Plan day rate to £17.50 (applicable to all plans started during the 2009/2010 scheme year)
  • Increase in the minimum duration of training acceptable within a Training Plan from 30 minutes to three hours (applicable to all plans started on or after 1 January 2010)
  • Limit on the entitlement to the Training and Development Plan per capita grant (£9 per head with a minimum of £450 payable) to the first Training Plan only (effective for all plans started on or after 1 January 2010)
  • Reduction in all other grants by 15%, with the exception of grants for apprenticeships and undergraduates.

For FeRFA members this means the NVQ2 grant has been reduced from £450 to £382.50 and NVQ3 from £630 to £535.50

APPRENTICESHIP SCHEMES UNAFFECTED BY CHANGES IN GRANTS

The most cost-effective method of training newcomers to the industry is via the Apprenticeship Scheme. FeRFA will be starting new schemes for both In Situ Resin and Surface Preparation early in 2010. This training is fully grant funded and leads to the full NVQ level 2 within two years.

For more information on both the schemes, the costs and grants available click on this LINK. You can also download scheme booklets and an enrolment form from the training page.

UKCG SUPERVISOR TRAINING STANDARD IS POLICY FROM JANUARY 2010

The new UK Contractors Group (UKCG) Supervisor Training Standard will apply on all UKCG sites from 1 January 2010.

Under the new standard, all site supervisors must be able to demonstrate that they have sufficient health and safety knowledge and have undergone training on behavioural issues, leadership and effective intervention. As an employer you are free to choose how, and from where, the required training is sourced; however, the UKCG recognises the 2-day Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS).

(Note that the NVQ3 and NVQ4 via OSAT also meet with the new requirements.  For information on how to register, FeRFA assessors and grant funding, contact FeRFA on 01252 714250).

As a FeRFA member, you can receive a £50 discount (through the NSCC) on both the SSSTS and SMSTS courses when booking with one of its chosen providers – for details, visit www.ferfa.org.uk/html/pdf/Training/SiteSupervisorDates2010.pdf.

A copy of the new standard along with a full list of UKCG members can be found at www.ukcg.org.uk
