SIKA DELIVERS SEAMLESS FLOOR SYSTEM AT YORK HOSPITAL

Sika York HospitalSika has completed a successful trial application of its groundbreaking ComfortFloor system to a newly-refurbished single room and en-suite shower room at York Hospital. With existing vinyl flooring throughout the building prone to splitting and peeling – resulting in trip hazards and trapping dirt and germs – the hospital undertook the trial of an alternative solution to eliminate these risks, turning to Sika’s innovative liquid-applied system.

Combining noise suppression and durability with a flawless finish it proved to be the ideal solution at the hospital, where exceptional cleanliness is a prerequisite, providing a seamless flooring surface – even where it joins with traditional vinyl flooring – that can be easily cleaned, maintained and with exceptional long term performance.

To apply the base coat, Sikafloor 330, the two part solvent free, self-smoothing PUR resin was applied to the floor. Following this, a layer of Sikafloor 305 W was installed as a sealer to the surface, providing a total system thickness of approximately 3mm, with the entire floor completed seamlessly, including liquid-applied cove detailing in place of traditional skirting. In the shower room, the seamless application was continued, with the simple addition of quartz to provide improved slip-resistance in the potentially wet environment.

Now complete, the single room in Ward 24 offers high performance flooring that will outperform traditional vinyl for many years to come. Providing a comfortable and resilient surface, the Sika ComfortFloor system will also ensure that the floor remains completely seamless, to make cleaning easy, prevent trip hazards and maintain its stunning aesthetic.

KDH PROVIDE FAST TRACK REFURBISHMENT FOR MORRISONS

KDH Projects is in the final stages of factory refurbishment at Morrisons Deeside. The food industry construction company began the project at the end of July and will complete it just eight weeks later, at the end of September.

KDH MorrisonsThe project took place in high and low care areas of the factory, removing old flooring, drainage, walls and freezers and replacing them, creating a better, more hygienic factory environment. The existing flooring has been taken up, new stainless steel drainage systems fitted and KDH’s own brand of polyurethane resin flooring, Food-Crete™ has been laid throughout the high and low care areas.
Fast curing, durable and hygienic, Food-Crete™ is a polyurethane resin flooring system created specifically for the food industry. The low odour, non-tainting formula enables KDH to lay flooring in live production areas without evacuation and the quick curing time causes minimal disruption.

Each team of staff at KDH are specialist in a particular area: building and maintenance, flooring and drainage, cooling and ventilation or electrical and mechanical works. They have been working together, around the clock to ensure the fast-track task will be completed on time, to the usual high standards displayed by KDH.

INSIDE / OUTSIDE ENERGY HOMES AT SALFORD UNIVERSITY

Resdev SalfordAt a glance this appears to be two quaint Victorian cottages - but look again. They are, in fact, pre 1915 reconstructed homes utilising reclaimed materials to represent the 4.5 million homes of this type still occupied in the UK. The full-size houses have been rebuilt by ISG, at Salford University's Energy Hub, inside an environmentally controllable chamber in which climatic conditions can be controlled and created.

In order to complete the chamber and meet customer needs, a heavy duty seamless polyurethane screed system with integral coving, stepped levels, and drainage wells was installed. The unique facility is being used as a test bed for leading academics to work collaboratively with industry in the devolvement and testing of new energy efficient products and solutions for the retrofit market. With this in mind, the Pumadur range of Specialist Polyurethane Resin Flooring Systems, manufactured by Resdev Ltd, were chosen.

Resdev's Pumadur HF, polyurethane floor screed, was applied at a thickness of 6mm on the stepped plinth level, main floor area and in an adjacent plant room. The sides of the plinth, coving and drainage wells were formed using Resdev's Pumadur CG, polyurethane coving grade and Pumadur WR, polyurethane wall render, to ensure that the completed installation provided a profiled slip resistant 'boxed' finish to meet the university's requirement for a durable, easy to clean system with excellent chemical resistance properties and ability to withstand regular water spillage.

PATHS FOR HEROES FROM RONADECK AND PRESTEC

RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing system has been laid to the paved areas surrounding Tedworth House in Tidworth, Wiltshire. The paths were laid as part of a £17m project to transform the Grade 2 listed house into a Personnel Recovery and Assessment Centre (PRAC) for injured service personnel.

RonacreteTedworthAfter consultation with Ronacrete’s technical team, Architects BWA chose RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing for its natural appearance, permeability and suitability for wheelchairs. RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing provides a strong, durable pavement, which is particularly suitable for wheelchair ‘traffic’ as wheels will not sink and get caught as they do in loose gravel paths.  The porosity of the system makes it SuDS compliant, allowing water to drain to the base and ensuring that paths are free from standing water.

Golden Harvest was selected from the RonaDeck range of natural aggregate blends, each formulated for strength and appearance. The golden shade will not change over time because the elastic polyurethane resin does not degrade when exposed to Ultra Violet light.

FeRFA contractors Prestec mixed the two-part pu resin with a drill and paddle before it was added to the kiln-dried aggregate blend in the high capacity forced action mixer. The mixed material was then discharged onto the macadam substrate, spread to level and trowel finished at a thickness of 15mm.  After completion the paving was ready for foot traffic within 4 hours.
