FeRFA e-news June 2011

TAF finalistWe are delighted this month to announce that, following the launch of the new Recycling Scheme, FeRFA has been shortlisted in the Trade Association Forum’s (TAF) Best Practice Awards in the Environmental Initiative of the Year category.

The recycling scheme is a major initiative to bring contractors and manufacturers together in a collection and recycling programme for waste packaging, in support of the UK Construction’s  Halving Waste to Landfill commitment.  The great benefit of this scheme is that it is having an immediate and positive impact on the environment , it saves money and resources by managing waste more efficiently, and is an industry first through the introduction of a closed loop system to re-use waste plastic packaging.

This is definitely an award winning initiative - for FeRFA and for its members.

FLOWCRETE & Q FLOORING DELIVER BEST IN CLASS FLOORING AT SOUTH CHESHIRE COLLEGE

Flowcrete South Cheshire CollegeSouth Cheshire College’s new state-of-the-art, low carbon development is set to lead education in the Crewe and Nantwich area into a new era. As well as extensive social areas with first class education classrooms South Cheshire College provides vocational facilities and workshops. The incorporation of training restaurants, hair and beauty salons, a fitness academy, theatre, travel centre and childcare are beneficial to both staff and students and meet the needs of local residents too.

Architect for the eye-catching, sustainable campus was Jefferson Sheard of Sheffield and Peterborough, and the building was constructed by BAM Construction. Flowcrete’s products were selected after the client made a site visit to the company’s headquarters, in the neighbouring Cheshire town of Sandbach.

As well as meeting employees who had been educated at the College, the visitors were able to see how Flowcrete had undertaken its own sustainable development – completed in 2010 – which involved the ‘green’ construction of new headquarters. As a result, before making their choice, they were able to see firsthand how the company’s award-winning systems work to create a safer, comfortable, more efficient and stylish environment.

Flowcrete approved contractor Q Flooring installed the fast-track decorative terrazzo-effect resin flooring Flowfast Terrosso – which is ready for use just two hours after installation – was then applied over Isocrete K-Screedwithin the main atria and stairwells of the campus, providing a contemporary finish to this state-of-the-art development.

SIKA AND IRL GROUP DEMONSTRATE THE VERSATILITY OF SIKAFLOOR AND VALUE OF TRUE COLLABORATION

With the existing floor of its manufacturing facility failing in many places, Areva T&D – global leading provider of CO2-free energy solutions for electricity transmission and distribution – required a solution that could offer long term performance and reliability along with ease of installation to minimise disruption. The solution also had to meet the demands of the different areas within the 16,000 sqm manufacturing facility in Stafford.

Sika IRL Areava Working with specialist contractor IRL, Sika demonstrated that its Sikafloor system would provide a finished floor that would be able to withstand continuous traffic and heavy loads and also provide a variety of finishes – anti-static for sensitive areas integral to Areva T&D’s manufacturing process and supremely smooth for areas where air skates are used to move extremely heavy loads. The system also met the client’s aesthetic requirements as it was crucial that different areas were identified by colour, in particular, health and safety walkways.

For the numerous areas of Areva T&D’s estate, which is spread over three buildings, a slightly different specification of product was required to meet all of the client’s requirements in a single versatile system with the peace of mind that the new floor will last for decades, minimising maintenance cost whilst providing a safe environment in which to work. As the flooring will be expected to undergo the most rigorous daily usage whilst retaining its smoothness, it stands as an example of hard work, good product specification, quality craftsmanship, training and communication from both IRL and Sika.
