FeRFA e-news December 2011

As 2011 draws to a close, it is a good time to reflect on the previous 12 months in the resin flooring industry.    Despite the general economic downturn and a slowing down in construction activity, resin flooring has continued to be used in specialist areas where it out performs other types of flooring.   Seamless resin flooring is the preferred option for the refurbishment and renewal of industrial floors, particularly in the food and beverage sector.

Applying resin flooring is a specialist skill area, where training and upskilling is vital to ensure a successful project.  During  2011 we have seen real evidence of FeRFA members’  continuous commitment to training with the increasing number of NVQ  Level 2/3 achievements and the growing number of apprentices joining the FeRFA Apprenticeship schemes.

2011 has also seen the launch of FeRFA’s awarding winning recycling scheme, where once again our members have shown their support by joining the scheme, adopting sustainable practices, resulting in FeRFA exceeding its Year 1 target for reducing waste to landfill.  So, congratulations to all of our members for their achievements this year  and  for upholding the FeRFA stamp of quality.

Our very best wishes to all for a Happy Christmas, and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year.

Helen McGachie, FeRFA CEO

Courses are available in In Situ Resin flooring and Surface Preparation - both of which lead to an NVQ Level 2 Diploma within two years.  Courses are also being delivered in Scotland, giving Scottish candidates access to specialist training as well.

The FeRFA website has comprehensive information on training and grants, including the apprenticeship schemes for In Situ Resin flooring and Surface Preparation, Upskilling courses and NVQs.  Visit www.ferfa.org.uk to find out more.

RSL PROVIDE FLOORS AND WALLS FOR HIGH SECURITY PRISON FACILITY

RSL (Resin Surfaces Limited) recently completed a prestigious project in conjunction with Main Contractors Carillion for The Greater Manchester Police. Carillion were tasked with building a modern state of the art police station in Newton Heath which included the construction of a highly efficient custody block.

RSL GMPThe floors and walls of the specialist cells needed to adhere to a strict brief which focused on durability whilst providing a seamless finish. The trowel applied, decorative epoxy resin floor screed, Resucreed Quartz, was the ideal choice for the floors. It provides a durable and impact resistant surface which incorporates coloured aggregates and provides a decorative modern finish to the hard wearing and hygienic surface. For security and safety reasons prison cells are required to be seamless from the floor to the ceiling.  Resuscreed Quartz was used to create coved skirting’s when applying the floor, creating a room which would allow  for ease of cleaning as dirt and surface contamination could be easily cleaned from the perimeters.

The walls and ceilings were coated in RSL’s Ecuclad; a joint free fibre glass reinforced walling system which was moulded round the corners providing an easy to clean and hard wearing surface. Ecuclad has a strong finish due to a layer of fibreglass which is embedded within it; the fibreglass provides reinforcement and protection to the underlying wall.
Both of the RSL products used are able to withstand an intensive cleaning regime which is a key requirement for custodial environments.

STEPPING INTO GINA'S SHOES.....

Established in 1954 by master shoemaker Mehmet Kurdash, Gina Shoes was created with sheer determination to craft the most beautifully handmade footwear from the finest of materials. Having become a truly iconic brand, this exquisite high end manufacturer and retailer recently decided to relocate to larger premises to fulfil the growing demand for Gina extraordinary footwear and accessories.

A former clothing warehouse totalling over 3,000sqm that was chosen for the new Gina factory, offers a vast production and warehouse facility, as well as a design studio and client viewing area, making it the perfect location to grow this superb brand. However, before Gina could relocate to the new premises, most areas of the facility had to undergo major renovation to ensure the interiors corresponded with the professional identity of the business.

National Flooring Gina ShoesFollowing consultations with specialist resin flooring company, National Flooring, it became apparent that not one, but a variety of solutions were needed to meet the different requirements within the building. Gina also made it very clear that the end result had to be synonymous with everything that the company stands for – uncompromising quality, elegance, and style.
For the main production and office areas, the client wanted to create a light and minimalistic look enhanced by a floor finish that could incorporate the colour of the metallic overhead structure, featured throughout the building. Due to health and safety regulations, it was also necessary to incorporate yellow walkways into the design layout.
To fulfil all Gina’s requirements, National Flooring chose the specialist range of Degafloor MMA resin flooring systems, which deliver outstanding quality, practicality, and exceptional flexibility in terms of aesthetics.

As forklift trucks are often in operation in the warehouse area, the heavy duty, slip resistant Degafloor QT finish was used with Degafloor FB system to enhance slip resistance even further by the roller shutter doors, an area regularly exposed to wet conditions.

The whole project was a real success making the shortlist for FeRFA large project of the year awards. The Degafloor finishes complement perfectly what the client had envisaged for Gina’s new factory in terms of usability, aesthetics, and the overall ‘wow’ factor.
