FeRFA is starting its next apprenticeship schemes in the Autumn - to start 27 and 28 September.

Three schemes are available - all of which take two years and lead to an NVQ level 2 Diploma:

  • Insitu Flooring: Resin
  • Insitu Flooring: Screeds and
  • Preparing and Profiling Substrates

All the courses include mandatory topics on health & safety, asbestos awareness, first aid, manual handling, together with work practice/project planning and then there are modules (which are practical and theortetical in either resin, screed or surface preparation topics).

The fees for the scheme are £6,000 per candidate (discounts available for two or more apprentices and previous users of the schemes) and is fully grant funded for CITB registered employers.

If you would like to find out more about the apprenticeships, please visit: the apprenticeship page where you can also download a candidate enrolment form or get in contact with FeRFA direct.

If you are looking for career development, then consider enrolling on the NVQ level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision.

It is a 10 day course which takes three months and consists of 9 Modules (which are taken over 10 days as off-site training).
The cost for the course per candidate is £2,520 payable in three instalments, and the current CITB grant is £2,225 (plus 10% if levy paid in time). This includes all the training plus food and accommodation for the training days. The course includes 12 days, in two day sessions around 6 weeks apart, in the classroom and at the same time candidates will work, using on-line workbooks, to gather a portfolio of evidence during that time. The process will be fully explained at the first sessions. Once the programme is complete and enough evidence has been gathered candidates will achieve their qualification. The Supreme Court ruled yesterday that tribunal fees, brought in by the government in 2013, are unlawful.

The case was brought by the union Unison in March. They argued that the fees prevented workers from pursuing claims and accessing any sort of justice. Fees of up to £1,200 were originally introduced to reduce the number of malicious and weak cases, and led to a disproportionate 79% decrease in the number of cases brought from 2013 – 2016.

The fees for tribunals differed depending on the seriousness of the claim. For cases related to unpaid wages, redundancy pay or breach of contract, the claim fee was £160 and hearing fee was £230. For unfair dismissal, equal pay, discrimination or whistleblowing, the claim fee was £250 and hearing fee was £950.

The Ministry of Justice said the government will take immediate steps to stop making tribunal charges and refund any payments, possibly up to the value of £32m.

In light of this development, tribunal claims are sure to increase. We would advise you to make sure all of your employment literature, especially your employee handbooks, are up to date.

FeRFA members can speak to Stallard Kane Associates on 0345 076 6485 for further information and advice.

Build UK LogoThe 2016/17 BUILD UK Accident Survey is now live for FeRFA CONTRACTOR MEMBERS to submit accident statistics for the last 12 months from 1 April 2016 – 31 March 2017 via the following link:

Accident Survey 2016/17

The deadline for responses to this year’s survey is Friday 1 September 2017 - but please don't wait until the deadline to complete it as we will send regular reminders until it is completed.
It should only take a few minutes to do, and if you have had no reportable accidents it will be just seconds as all you need to give is number of employees for that period, then click NO to accidents and it is done.

Please note that providing annual accident statistics is a requirement of membership for contractors.

A good response to the survey is vital as the information can be used to demonstrate to clients and others that the safety record of members is better than non-members. It can also help to identify accident trends in order to produce guidance which can reduce the risk of similar incidents in future.
