Belfry VistaThe FeRFA Annual General Meeting and Dinner 2017 will be held on:
Friday 17 November at the Belfry Hotel in the West Midlands.

Following the success of the new format last year, we will again have a shorter afternoon annual general meeting, with time for networking, so that guests can get ready for the evening entertainment and allow couples to travel together.

The Woodlands Suite at the Belfry provides a spacious setting in which to host this popular event and we look forward to welcoming members and their guests in November.

Full details and booking forms will be issued later in the year, but meanwhile please get the date in your diary.

FeRFA GOLF DAY - Friday 16 June 2017

Erewash Valley Golf Club ImageThis year we will be returning to the Erewash Valley Golf Club for this year's event on Friday 16 June 2017.

Situated in Stanton By Dale, Ilkeston, the golf club fully deserves its reputation as a top class venue with a well maintained 18-hole course along with a welcoming clubhouse.  The excellent and scenic use of natural features provides enjoyable year round golfing and will test the skills of all standards of golfer.
The event is open to all members, and you are welcome to bring along customers and colleagues for the day.

Meet at 9.00 for bacon butties and refreshments, with a first tee-off time is 09.30 for a Stableford 4 balls competition.
Play will be in teams of four, so ideally participants are encouraged to put together their own teams but we will of course be able to make up teams if this is not possible for you.

The cost for the day's golf including breakfast and prizes will be £35 per player. Details are on the form, but players are requested to pay the fee of £35 per player to Tom Dossett on the day of the tournament.  Please complete the booking form here to hold a place for your team.

Trent Construction successful apprenticesCongratulations to Thomas Henderson and Michael Gibbs (pictured left), from Trent Construction Services, who are the first two apprentices on the FeRFA screeding apprenticeship to qualify under the scheme.

The two year screeding apprenticeship, developed in partnership with and grant funded by the CITB, was launched in March 2015. Trent Construction Services provided excellent support to their apprentices throughout the training and assessment periods, enabling them to become an industry first.

Of their achievement, Chris Henderson, MD of Trent Construction Services Ltd, said, “Thomas & Michael have both worked extremely hard over the past couple of years and we’re proud to see that this commitment has been recognised in them achieving this qualification.”

We are delighted for them both, this is a great achievement. Throughout the two-year pilot scheme, Thomas and Michael have shown such a positive and enthusiastic attitude to learning both the theory and the practical elements for each training module. Their progress has been clearly evidenced by their increased level of skill and competence. The achievement of the NVQL2 is well deserved.

Good luck to them with their careers and we hope to welcome them both to the apprentice graduation at the Belfry in November to receive their framed certificates.

This month we welcomed 14 new apprentices - nine started on the In Situ Resin scheme and five on the surface preparation scheme.  The two year courses will both lead to an NVQ level 2 diploma and are fully grant funded by CITB for in scope employers.

FeRFA Trainer Terry Foxley guided the apprentices in this group for the first of their two day modules which included an introduction to the scheme, an induction from CITB, and an in-depth health & safety training session.

Resin 19 and Prep 9 Group On the Resin Scheme the apprentices are: Liam Griffin (Britannia Industrial Flooring) Neil Garnon (F & G Industrial) Mitchell Cross (Orchid Flooring) Luke Oliver, Adam Oliver and Nicholas Lancaster (Polydeck Resins) Ben Tanner and Stefan Mordecai (TPS360) and Gregor Eckert (Veitchi Industrial)

On the Surface Preparation Scheme the apprentices are: Thomas Mallett (F & G Industrial) Sean Vickery and Richard Hughes (TPS360) Brian George and David Logan (Veitchi Industrial)

FeRFA's Upskilling courses are subsidised for members and cost just £50 per person and are eligible for grant funding (for CITB levy payers). FeRFA can organise upskilling days on a range of topics and, if you have at least six to eight staff members, they can be run at your premises (or another suitable venue) at a time to suit you.

  • Decorative Stone & Quartz Systems
  • Flowable Screeds

For more details on all the upskilling courses that are available please visit the Upskilling page of the website.

If you are looking for career development, then consider enrolling on the NVQ level 3 in Occupational Work Supervision.

It is a 10 day course which takes three months and consists of 9 Modules (which are taken over 10 days as off-site training).
The cost for the course per candidate is £2520 payable in three instalments, and the current CITB grant is £2,225 (plus 10% if levy paid in time). This includes all the training plus food and accommodation for the training days. For more information click on this link, which gives details on the modules as well: www.ferfa.org.uk/pdf/Training/SupervisorTrainingInfo.pdf

To take your career to the next level there is the NVQ level 6.

The course includes 12 days, in two day sessions around 6 weeks apart, in the classroom and at the same time candidates will work, using on-line workbooks, to gather a portfolio of evidence during that time. The process will be fully explained at the first sessions. Once the programme is complete and enough evidence has been gathered candidates will achieve their qualification.
The cost is £2,800 and grants are available for CITB levy payers totalling £1,900. Hotel accommodation can be booked locally to the course if required, at £50 + VAT per person, per night and includes breakfast but no evening meal.

It is easy to do using the datasheet (if not using Reconomy) - only two figures are needed per month - total weight collected and total weight recycled or recovered. This is information that should be provided by your waste collector. If it isn't then ask them why not. The spreadsheet includes a graph, automatically generated from your figures - which you can show to prospective clients.
