Resin 15 apprentices take their final module at Resdev

Resdev LogoThe Resin 15 apprentices spent three days as Resdev's training facility in Elland to complete their formal training. The apprentices had plenty of practical hands-on experience and the group thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to apply quartz materials and gain practice on their trowel work to take those skills into the workplace.  On the final day, FeRFA trainer, Terry Foxley gave the learners a review of the course as a whole and guidance on the next steps in the apprentices’ progress towards achieving their NVQ level 2 Diplomas. 

Boud Minerals LogoBoud Minerals kindly supplied the quartz mix for the Resdev screed - all of which was donated free of charge. The apprentices were able to perfect their techniques in screeding and coving working on purpose built wooden frames.

The apprentices in Resin group 15 are: Christopher Davey & Liam King (IRL Group Ltd), Alex Bowers (John Lord & Son Ltd), Paul Ratcliffe, Anthony Rowell and Matthew Haines (Midland Industrial Flooring), Robert Atkins (Central Flooring Services) and Aiden Binns (Hart Site Services Ltd)

Screeding apprentices complete their training at The Preparation Group

PPC LogoScreed 1 apprentices recently spent two days at the training facility of The Preparation Group in Lincoln learning about acoustic and thermal insulation, and underfloor heating systems.

Screed 1 Mod 13 PPCThe first part of the training module covered compliance and testing, robust details and installation methods for thermal and acoustic insulation, and was delivered by industry expert Ian Griffiths of Thermal Economics. The main focus of the second session was underfloor heating systems and installation methods from industry specialist Andy Vincent.

This is the final classroom module for this group who will use the skills learnt in the classroom to continue gaining experience in the workplace with their employers. They are due to complete in March 2017 following assessment by the FeRFA industry assessor. This group of apprentices will be the first in the UK to achieve the NVQL2 Insitu Flooring Screeds qualification via an apprenticeship route.

The newest group of FeRFA apprentices take part in their second training sessions at Altro

Altro LogoGroup 18 resin flooring apprentices travelled to Altro in Letchworth for modules 4 and 5. This, the second block on their training scheme, provided them with a comprehensive introduction to resin flooring systems and was followed by sessions on work practice and project planning on the second day.

The apprentices were also given time to get familiar with FeRFA's on-line elearning portal and went through the health and safety module with all passing the on-line test.

UPSKILLING COURSE - Specifying and Selecting Resin Flooring - 25 January

A one-day course on the Selecting and Specification of Resin Flooring Systems is being scheduled for:

Wednesday 25 January in the Coventry area - venue TBA

The cost for the training day is subsidesed by FeRFA and is just £50 each (for FeRFA Members) which includes all training, course papers, lunch and refreshments plus a certificate upon successful completion. CITB levy payers may also be eligible for grant funding of £50 (daily training plan rate).

For those that want to take the next step in their career, FeRFA organises courses for NVQ 3 and 6.

  • The next NVQ level 3 is starting on 30 & 31 January in Nottingham.
    It is 10 day course which takes three months and consists of 9 Modules (which are taken over 10 days as off-site training).
    The cost for the course per candidate is £2520 payable in three instalments, and the current CITB grant is £2,225 (plus 10% if levy paid in time). This includes all the training plus food and accommodation for the training days.

  • The next NVQ level 6 will start on 13 & 14 February and be held in Nottingham.
    The course includes 12 days, in two day sessions around 6 weeks apart, in the classroom and at the same time candidates will work, using on-line workbooks, to gather a portfolio of evidence during that time. The process will be fully explained at the first sessions. Once the programme is complete and enough evidence has been gathered candidates will achieve their qualification.
    The course is £2,800 and grants are available for CITB levy payers totalling £1,900. Hotel accommodation can be booked locally to the course if required, at £50 + VAT per person, per night and includes breakfast but no evening meal.

    * CITB grant funding is available to in-scope companies only.


TAC (Training and Assessment Consultants) has an SMSTS course (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) running on the following dates at its premises in Nottingham.

  • 19th & 20th January 2017 and then 23rd, 24th & 25th January 2017 (five days)

This year we are on target to report a 50% increase on the waste which was diverted from landfill in 2015. This goes to show how things have changed since FeRFA members started reporting their data in 2011. In five years the total is now over EIGHT times more than then!

If you aren't submitting your company data, it is very simple to do using our spreadsheet we only require two figures per month - total weight collected and total weight recycled or recovered. An easy to use template can be downloaded from the Recycling Section within the FeRFA Members Area. The spreadsheet also provides you wish a useful graph which you can show to clients and potential customers to demonstrate your commitment to sustainable practices. (If you use Reconomy as your waste provider, you do not have to provide separate statistics.)
