FeRFA AGM, BLACK TIE DINNER & AWARDS 2016 - Friday 11 November

Belfry Front Entrance ImageThe AGM and Awards Dinner at the Belfry provides the ideal opportunity to meet with colleagues, old and new, and network in convivial surroundings.  At the afternoon AGM you will find out what’s happening in the industry and to hear about the latest benefits and services available to FeRFA members. The FeRFA Awards Dinner will be a glittering event in the Woodlands Suite and an ideal opportunity to entertain customers, reward staff or enjoy a pre-Christmas get together with friends.

The Belfry Hotel underwent a major refurbishment in 2014 and offers luxurious accommodation, close to all the major transport links, yet set in the tranquil rolling Warwickshire countryside.  It has an excellent leisure complex with pool, sauna, steam room and whirlpool plus a spa offering a range of luxury treatments.

This year the industry event begins in the afternoon with the AGM and refreshments at 3 p.m. and ends with great evening entertainment provided by our host Colin Murray, followed by music and dancing.

Colin Murray ImageThree-time Sony Gold winner Colin Murray is a TV and radio presenter who has covered everything from sport to music to lifestyle in his varied career.  He hosts a daily show on talkSPORT and is a regular on the BBC. Following a stint on Radio 1’s daytime and then an early evening new music show, he has also he chaired Radio 5 Live’s sports panel show Fighting Talk, marshalling the egos of the competing pundits, comedians and journalists.

Moving to television, Colin hosted Match of the Day 2 and the ever-popular BDO World Darts Championships.  Away from broadcasting, Colin pens weekly columns for the Metro and the Radio Times, and has written a book, A Random History of Football.

The 2016 FeRFA Best Practice Awards will be presented after dinner and we will be honouring this year’s Apprentice Graduates with the presentation of their NVQ diplomas and certificates.

You can then dance the evening away or enjoy a drink in the Woodlands Bar.

Full details and a booking form can be downloaded here, so you can reserve your places and tables.

FeRFA GOLF DAY - Thursday 6 October 2016

Erewash Valley Golf Club ImageThe Erewash Valley Golf Club is our beautiful new venue for this year’s golf day on Thursday 6 October 2016.

Situated in Stanton By Dale, Ilkeston, the golf club fully deserves its reputation as a top class venue with a well maintained 18-hole course along with a welcoming clubhouse.  The excellent and scenic use of natural features provides enjoyable year round golfing and will test the skills of all standards of golfer.
The event is open to all members, and you are welcome to bring along customers and colleagues for the day.

The first tee-off time is 09.30 and the last 11.00 for a Stableford 4 balls competition.  Bacon butties and refreshments will be available before the start at 08.45.
Play will be in teams of four, so ideally participants are encouraged to put together their own teams but we will of course be able to make up teams if this is not possible for you.

The cost for the day's golf including breakfast and prizes will be £30 per player (plus VAT).  Please complete the booking form here and you will be invoiced for the payment.

FeRFA is starting its next apprenticeship schemes in the Autumn - to start on 27 and 28 September 2016.

Three schemes are available - all of which take two years and lead to an NVQ level 2 Diploma:

  • Insitu Flooring: Resin
  • Insitu Flooring: Screeds and
  • Preparing and Profiling Substrates

All the courses include mandatory topics on health & safety, asbestos awareness, first aid, manual handling, together with work practice/project planning and then there are modules (which are practical and theortetical in either resin, screed or surface preparation topics.

The fees for the scheme are £6,000 per candidate (discounts available for two or more apprentices and previous users of the schemes) and is fully grant funded for CITB registered employers.

If you would like to find out more about the apprenticeships, please visit: the apprenticeship page where you can also download a candidate enrolment form or get in contact with FeRFA direct.

CITB funding is available to support employers with their training to build a skilled workforce for the construction industry. This type of funding is for construction skills and training projects not supported by other CITB funding, like the grants scheme.

CITB LogoThe current funding window for Flexible and Structured and Applications must be submitted before 5pm on 15 August 2016.  Applications will be evaluated in August and September 2016, and results announced in October 2016.

If you have any queries or technical problems completing the form after reading the Guidance Notes, please contact CITB on 0344 994 4400 For more information about CITB funding or to apply go to: www.citb.co.uk/funding/

Following changes within CITB, whilst we do not have a Specialist Account Co-ordinator, there are a number of General and Specialist Training Groups that have been set up around the country. To find out the group that is most local to you, go to the Members Area of the FeRFA website and download the list from the Training section.

The 16th group of FeRFA resin flooring apprentices recently took their resin coatings module at Sika’s training facilities at Welwyn Garden City (mercifully air-conditioned as summer had well and truly arrived). As well as providing classroom facilities, Sika provided all the necessary materials for the practical sessions.

Resin 16 Module 11 ImageUnder the expert guidance of FeRFA trainer, Terry Foxley, the candidates gained valuable guidance and hands-on experience during the two days.

The apprentices in this group are: Daniel McLaughlin and Jordan Speed (4m Floors UK) Matthew Marvin (Central Flooring) Danny Malone (Coatech Ltd) Jack Findlay (Genco Construction) and Adam Moore, Jason Earl & Jake Ross (IRL Group Ltd)

The apprentices now have to complete their modules on Self Smoothing, Screeds and Coving and finally, Flowable Screeds. They will then continue to work with their employers, supervised on-site, to reach the necessary proficiency to be assessed for their NVQ level 2 Diplomas.

FeRFA offers a range of one day upskilling courses  at a cost of just £50 each (for FeRFA Members) which includes all training, course papers, lunch and refreshments plus a certificate upon successful completion. CITB levy payers may also be eligible for grant funding of £50 (daily training plan rate).

For more details on the Upskilling courses that are available please visit the Upskilling page of the website.

Trainee Card Changes ImageFrom 1st August 2016 new rules will apply to Trainee cards. Trainee cards will only be issued for qualifications leading to a skilled CSCS card.

The card will be valid for five years, be non-renewable and require the cardholder to register onto a construction related qualification recognised by CSCS.

CSCS LogoThe quickest and cheapest way to apply for a CSCS card is to do so directly through the CSCS contact centre on 0344 994 4777. CSCS cards cost £30, so be aware of the prices charged by third party organisations offering CSCS card application services. Read more...

Build UK LogoThe 2015/16 BUILD UK Accident Survey is now live for FeRFA CONTRACTOR MEMBERS to submit accident statistics for the last 12 months from 1 April 2015 – 31 March 2016 via the following link:

NSCC Accident Survey 2015/16

The deadline for responses to this year’s survey is Friday 2 September 2016 - but please don't wait until the deadline to complete it as we will send regular reminders until it is completed.
It should only take a few minutes to do, and if you have had no reportable accidents it will be just seconds as all you need to give is number of employees for that period, then click NO to accidents and it is done.

Please note that providing annual accident statistics is a requirement of membership for contractors.

A good response to the survey is vital as the information can be used to demonstrate to clients and others that the safety record of members is better than non-members. It can also help to identify accident trends in order to produce guidance which can reduce the risk of similar incidents in future.
