Lasting legacy of AltroScreed Quartz at White Water Centre

The Olympic legacy lives on at the Lee Valley White Water Centre in Hertfordshire, where AltroScreed Quartz epoxy resin provides a high-strength floor surface in corridors and changing rooms.

As soon as the last flames flickered out after an amazing summer of sport at London 2012, the work to ensure the Games' legacy began. Part of this legacy has been the continued use of Lee Valley White Water Centre at Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, the venue constructed to host the canoe slalom events for London 2012. The £31 million facility hosted 82 athletes for the White Water Canoe Slalom events at London 2012. It was the first of the newly constructed Olympic venues to be completed and included the installation of 500m2 of AltroScreed Quartz Epoxy Resin. The three-part, solvent-free AltroScreed Quartz system binds blended decorative quartz aggregate with clear epoxy resin, finished with clear seal coats, to a nominal thickness of 4-6mm. Ideally suited to medium-duty traffic areas, it provides a high-strength, chemically-resistant floor surface in the Centre's corridors and changing rooms. With its palette of 19 standard colours, AltroScreed Quartz's highly decorative finish makes it ideal for areas on public display. Appearance, maintenance and ease of cleaning were major considerations for the Centre as the area often becomes very wet from the wetsuits and spraydeck, and muddy feet are also a constant issue. AltroScreed Quartz comes with a warranty of up to 10 years. The Centre provides canoeing and rafting activities for users of all abilities who will be able to take advantage of the 300m Olympic-Standard Competition Course where the slalom athletes won their medals, and the 160m Legacy Loop course. After the Games, the spectator seating was removed and the venue was returned to its dual role as a leisure attraction for canoeing and white-water rafting and a competition venue for elite events. It benefits visitors and local residents alike, with an expected 200,000 people a year visitng. Lee Valley White Water Centre has already been recognised with RIBA East's Spirit of Ingenuity Award and the Secured by Design Award in 2012. The 10-hectare site will play host to the ICF Canoe Slalom World Championships in 2015.
