Dance Studio Refurbishment at Theatre Royal, Newcastle

The show still went on at the Theatre Royal in Newcastle when Reprotec Uk refurbished the dance floor with no disruption to the theatre’s busy schedule.

The dance studio at the Theatre Royal, Newcastle had old vinyl sheet flooring that was causing issues with dancing classes. They needed a seamless solution that was able to handle the football of a busy dance studio that would also fit in aesthetically with an historic Grade I listed building. Reprotec UK worked with Altro to find a solution. Altro Flexiflow was specified as it would provide all the benefits of vinyl yet would provide a seamless and sustainable flooring. The project was undertaken during a student break to prevent disruption. When the vinyl was removed it was discovered the timber floor was also failing. It was decided to overlay the existing plywood sheets with a waterproof plywood sheet, infilling the joints with Altro Flexiflow. Despite the added difficulties of the failed timber floor, the new flooring was successfully installed in time, with no disruption to the high profile theatre’s operations and programme. The sustainable floor provided a cost-effective, long term solution for the Theatre Royal, in keeping with the theatre’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact, with the liquid vinyl chosen specifically for its soft, warm qualities, which made it ideal for use in a dance studio. All the waste from the refurbishment was diverted from landfill. Reprotec was highly commended at the recent FeRFA Awards for its successful refurbishment of the studio.
