Altro and Surtech show art of bespoke design at new Jerwood Gallery

Bespoke Altro resin floors have been developed to complement the innovative design of the new Jerwood Gallery in Hastings.

The Jerwood Gallery is a £4m new gallery on the seafront in Hastings, housing the Jerwood Foundation’s collection of modern British paintings and drawings, and a curated exhibitions programme of contemporary art across disciplines. The building is a subtly faceted form clad in hand-glazed ceramic tiles, enclosing carefully calibrated internal spaces drawing in the views from the spectacular location and encouraging a sense of exploration and surprise. The gallery opened in March 2012 and recently won a Public and Community Award from the Sussex Heritage Trust. The architect, HAT Projects wanted a terrazzo style floor that had a texture to it, a slight warmth and movement. Altro worked closely with contractor Surtech Flooring who recommended Altro Terrazzolite EP resin flooring as the basis for the bespoke mix. Hand-made samples using different coloured marble chips were created and a pale pink was chosen for the galleries and foyers, and a darker pink for the toilets and café, which are lovely warm shades.” Altro Terrazzolite EP is a decorative four-part solvent-free epoxy resin system, and has been hailed as a revolution in resin flooring. It’s a lightweight, seamless, sophisticated marble-look resin that delivers a touch of class to public and communal areas. It uses naturally coloured marble chips bound together with a coloured epoxy resin and is then ground and polished. It has a nominal thickness of 6mm and uses matching sections of perimeter skirting which are preformed off-site.
